The Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation For Documentary Photography & Film

Announcing 2016 call for entries

We are excited to announce the opening of our 2016 call for documentary photography and film grant entries. Created to encourage the betterment of humanity through editorially-based imagery of themes including human unrest, famine, disease, politics, war, uprisings, injustice and triumph, we invite photographers and film makers to submit their applications and works through March 31, 2016. Two $5000 awards will be announced in July 2016 during Les Rencontres d’Arles in France. See details for documentary photography submissions here and documentary short films here.

Laurence Bonvin – 2015 Film Grant

Swiss documentary photographer and film maker Laurence Bonvin has won the 2015 MRO Foundation grant for Documentary Film. Her moving film, Sounds of Blikkiesdorp, documents life in a government built settlement in Cape Town, South Africa setup as temporary housing for 1,600 forcefully resettled residents shortly before the 2010 World Cup. Blikkiesdorp now shelters a population of 25,000 by many estimates. Going beyond violence and despair, Bonvin focuses on the perseverance and resourcefulness of the people to improve their homes and lives with music as think between themselves and the dwellings and alleys.

Pablo Piovano – 2015 Photo Grant

We are proud to announce that Pablo Ernesto Piovano of Argentina has been awarded our 2015 Documentary Photography Grant for his work and project proposal The Human Cost of Agrotoxins. The selection was held in the new MROF exhibition space in Arles, France. Among 12 amazing finalist proposals, the jury was most moved by Mr. Piovano’s portfolio on the devastating effects of glyphosate herbicide spraying across much of Argentina and the impact on the environment and the people. The jury also gave honorable mention to Sven Zellner of Germany for his Childhood in Romania portfolio.

La Provence: In Arles, the summer season does not satisfy all the revelers. After the July festivals, the Arles nightlife seems almost non-existent. A few steps from the Place du Forum, in the picturesque Calade street, a bar opened its doors this summer. Outside of the Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation, bass sounds ring. “In early summer, […]
