Colonial Pine
KUO Che-Hsi
" Transforming landscapes by reshaping space and architecture is one of the favorite ways for those in power to propagate their ideology and redefine a territory's identity. In Taiwan, with its complex colonial history, this phenomenon is even more pronounced. The series of photographs presented here takes as its theme Cunningham's araucaria tree - Colonial Pine in English.
The artist seeks to decipher the way in which this exogenous tree from Australia has been used in Taiwan by different regimes for political purposes. "
