The Mamuthones

Antonio D’AMBROSIO

In Mamoiada, which is celebrated on 17 January on the occasion of the feast of S. Antonio Abate, a pagan rite is celebrated whose origins are lost in the mists of time. At the centre of the ritual are the Mamuthones and the Issohadores: two male figures who, although dressed differently and apparently in contrast, are in fact complementary, inseparable and unmistakable. The ritual begins with the dressing, which reaches its climax at the moment when the Mamuthones and the Issohadores put on their masks.
