The Ashes of the Future

Alexandre DUPEYRON

Vestige of one world, prelude to another.
Today, across the planet, wildfires are reaching an unprecedented intensity. Alexandre Dupeyron has followed their traces, from Australia to France, through the United States, where he met with researchers at the Rocky Mountain Research Station and the Fire Lab, a unique site where fire is studied through controlled combustion. Mark Finney and his team do not seek to extinguish fire, but to analyze its dynamics and rethink our relationship with it.

For the fires we endure are a reflection of our choices. Our landscapes no longer know how to burn except through catastrophe. We have made fire our enemy, yet it merely reveals our own vanities.

Alexandre Dupeyron explores this tension through an approach where scientific observation and artistic research intersect. By combining gum bichromate prints, topographical surveys of burned landscapes, archival materials, and documentary images, he creates a visual language that resists standardization, an echo of the transformations of the living world in the face of the upheavals of the Anthropocene.
