Sorry I Gave Birth, I Disappeared, But Now I Am Back is a deeply personal project in which Hungarian artist Andi Gáldi Vinkó traces the raw, turbulent, and transformative realities of motherhood. Born out of a pregnancy that unexpectedly interrupted a flourishing artistic career, the work explores the emotional highs and lows, vulnerability, physical intensity, and shifts in identity that accompany the transition into motherhood.
Gáldi Vinkó juxtaposes intimate and often unfiltered moments—exhaustion, bodily transformations, and domestic chaos—with scenes of tenderness, joy, and connection. Blending staged photographs with documentary imagery, she challenges culturally romanticized representations of motherhood, addressing its taboos, solitude, contradictions, and the constant tension between personal ambition and the demands of caring for young children.
Both a visual diary and a broader reflection on womanhood, time, and selfhood, the project examines the challenges of reconciling artistic identity with maternal responsibilities. Through an honest and nuanced portrayal of lived experience, Sorry I Gave Birth, I Disappeared, But Now I Am Back offers a powerful meditation on the ways motherhood reshapes both life and creative practice.
