In the Shadow of Silence

Deutsche Fotografische Akademie

This exhibition brings together artists from the Deutsche Fotografische Akademie (DFA), whose works explore the close connections between personal histories and societal responsibility.

Family is approached as a space of intimacy, power, mutual support, and silence—a microcosm of broader social and historical dynamics. Fathers are presented here in all the complexity of their role: as central figures of reference, entrusted with responsibility, yet also as individuals shaped by history, simultaneously present and absent. Experiences of war, guilt, and silence continue to weigh on family relationships across generations.

The artists intertwine personal biographies with collective experiences such as the legacy of National Socialism, structural violence, religious conflict, and economic transformation. Rather than documenting these histories directly, the works evoke them through absence, fragmented memories, and silence, creating an emotional and reflective space for the viewer.

Beyond biological ancestry, the exhibition also reveals alternative forms of kinship, including friendships, partnerships, and intergenerational relationships, broadening our understanding of belonging and connection.

Featuring works by Wolfgang Gscheidle, Katrin Jaquet, Fatih Kurçeren, Paula Markert, Sabine Schründer, and Andreas Trogisch.
