Hexagone
Eric Bouvet & Yan Morvan
Hexagone, a project developed by Eric Bouvet and Yan Morvan, unfolded over more than nine years, spanning the political rupture marked by the 2017 French presidential campaign, the trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic, the outbreak of war on Europe’s doorstep, shifting global geopolitical dynamics, and the second term of President Emmanuel Macron, until the passing of Yan Morvan in 2024. Over the course of the project, more than 80,000 kilometers were traveled across mainland France, excluding the overseas territories.
Photographed primarily using a 20 × 25 large-format camera, and partly with a Fujifilm GFX system, the project’s methodology is central to its meaning. It reflects an ambitious and respectful undertaking that allows the people of France to present—and represent—themselves. The photographers also gathered a wide range of testimonies, capturing commitments, anxieties, anger, and pride. The faces are diverse, the voices collective. Shared foundations and deep fractures alike come into view, from the national narrative to a multicultural panorama, from emancipatory histories to ideological battlegrounds.
What, then, is France? Is it a territory, a heritage, a language, a climate, or a fiction? Two centuries ago, the historian Jules Michelet described it as “a soul and a person.” Hexagone revisits this question through the multiplicity of contemporary French experiences, offering a portrait of a nation in search of itself.
