Freelens x Hamburg Portfolio Review
Family is a place of intimacy, care, and belonging, but also a space shaped by power, silence, inherited narratives, and social expectations. It is not a fixed entity, but a network of relationships, memories, and obligations that is continuously formed and transformed across generations, shaped by childhood, the transition into adulthood, diverse cultural experiences, and lived realities.
This exhibition examines the family as both a social and emotional foundation. It explores processes of transmission and rupture, notions of responsibility, authority, and cohesion, and considers how new family constellations, changing social conditions, and autobiographical perspectives reshape understandings of origin, attachment, and identity.
The six artistic positions presented here combine documentary research, autobiographical inquiry, and constructed visual narratives. In their diversity, they portray the family as a fragile, open, and often contradictory structure—one that remains in a constant state of negotiation and redefinition.
