In Soum, Eveline Bonkoungou explores fraternity and community through the stories of Burkinabé brothers and sisters reunited in France. These are not bonds of blood, but bonds of the heart—formed through shared culture, experiences, and mutual support. In Nîmes, Marseille, Montpellier, Bordeaux, Paris, and Arles, this chosen family reveals itself as a living presence across different places and lives.
Through portraits, personal narratives, and sound recordings, the project sheds light on the journeys, emotions, and experiences of these men and women as they build their lives in France. The recorded voices add an intimate and vivid dimension, allowing participants to speak for themselves and share their stories in their own words.
Bonkoungou’s work affirms that fraternity extends beyond the traditional family unit. It emerges through solidarity, shared experiences, and a common cultural heritage. By giving voice to these stories, she offers a different perspective on the Burkinabé diaspora and reminds us that bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood can be forged anywhere, transcending geographical and cultural borders.
