Through Everyday Maneuver and Landscape of Energy – Stillness, Yuan Goang-Ming examines the invisible tensions that shape everyday life, revealing how threats linked to war, surveillance, and energy crises become silently embedded within ordinary environments.
In Everyday Maneuver, filmed during Taiwan’s “Wanan” civil defense drills, the city—emptied of all human presence—appears suspended in an uncertain moment in time. Captured through aerial imagery, Taipei’s major thoroughfares become deserted landscapes that are at once familiar and uncanny, revealing the intrusion of war into the fabric of daily life. The work demonstrates how the prospect of conflict is absorbed into collective routines, transforming a state of alert into an ordinary experience.
With Landscape of Energy – Stillness, this tension shifts to a reconstructed coastal landscape from which all human presence has been removed. Confronted with a nuclear power plant visible on the horizon, the scene exposes a dissonance between apparent normality and latent danger. The work extends the artist’s ongoing reflection on domestic space and the conditions of contemporary living.
In both works, human absence serves as a means of revealing the invisible political, technological, and environmental forces that shape our lives. Through a sense of estrangement, suspension, and diffuse unease, Yuan Goang-Ming transforms the landscape into a critical space where the vulnerabilities of the contemporary world become visible.
