Tobacco Leaves

HSU Cheng-Tang

After years away from his native village on the banks of the Zhuoshui River, Hsu Cheng-Tang has settled here for the long term. Since 2013, he has embarked on a documentary photographic series on this river, of which Tobacco Leaves on the theme of tobacco, is one component. This work on a crop that spread to Taiwan at the time of Japanese colonization, then stopped for reasons relating both to the evolution of world trade and the country's industrial policy, gives an insight into the lifestyle of farmers in the Zhuoshui basin, their way of working and the landscapes in which they live.
